Peter conceived a unique design, focusing on durability and safety. The first Hov Pod hovercraft were built from from glass fiber, but with twin layers covered in Kevlar, which is fundamentally impervious to bullets. We then fitted some special shock absorption pads, various engine choices – this all happened between 2002 to 2006. In the first place, we we decided on engines made by Hirth, then made a decision to change over to Rotax – they are better supported internationally, run more quietly, are more powerful and high quality documentation. A focus on safety issues obviated controls that weren’t really necessary – we removed levers for trim, decided against 2 engines for forward motion and lift, ruled out gearboxes, to ensure that anyone can pilot our hovercraft without going through rigorous training. While it’s a fact that the Hov Pod is not speediest beast on the market, it get up to speeds of forty miles per hour, a speed that is quite fast enough for most folk. If you take a peak at the rear of the majority of small vehicles, you will find no protection around the fan – the cages we install on the Hov Pod are thought by racers to add to air turbulance and lower speed.
